Axialities

Exploded Axial Stones – 2008A series of sound studies inspired by George Quasha’s Axial Stones. The only sound sources for these pieces are from four separate field recordings of hitting, scraping and throwing stones of various sizes. These sources were then manipulated using granular synthesis techniques and other forms of processing.
The connection to Quasha’s stone placements is in the attempt to juxtapose balance with dynamics – and in the sonic realm, to create an aural incongruity between familiar sounds of stones and rocks in various states of contact, and their transitions into other sonic forms, which are sometimes evocative of totally unrelated sounds.
